As I was involved in the setting up of the Women’s Equality Party in 2015, one might think that like one of its founders, Sandi Toksvig , that I was “heartsore” at its demise.
On the contrary, I read the room in 2018 and was out of there and am only surprised it hung on as long as it did, taking the donations and membership subscriptions of women who could often ill afford them but remained hopeful somehow.
The announcement that the party was being wound up was made in The Guardian. Of course. And it is a piece of dissembling, self-deluding nonsense but that has been WEP’s modus operandi for the past few years.
Am I sad that a supposedly feminist party is no more? Well, I would be if they were actually a feminist party - it’s clear they have not been for some time -but a quick look at X will reveal just how betrayed so many women felt who put their heart and soul into trying to make it work.
